湯用彤先生在其佛教史名著《漢魏兩晉南北朝佛教史》中，曾依據梁慧皎《高僧傳》中的說法， 1 提出「高僧」和「名僧」的區分問題，認為名僧和同風氣，依傍時代，往往只能使佛法燦爛於當時；高僧則特立獨行，是釋迦精神之所寄，每每能使教澤寄被於來世。湯先生書中根據這一區分的標準，提出東晉道安大師（312-385）不僅是一位「高僧」，而且是「幾可與於特出高僧之數」的那些少數能為佛教開闢新紀元的一代高僧。
