志於學
熊十力 ( 1885~1968 )

為學，苦事也，亦樂事也。
唯真志於學者，乃能忘其苦而知其樂。
蓋欲有造於學也，則凡世間一切之富貴榮譽皆不能顧。
甘貧賤，忍澹泊，是非至苦之事歟！

人謂我孤冷，吾以為人不孤冷到極度，不堪與世諧和。
凡有志於根本學術者，當有孤往精神。

Annals on Learning
Xiong Shili (1885 - 1968)

Learning is a task that is both arduous and pleasurable.
The ability to forget the difficulties and to know only
the pleasurable side of studies is a true sign of a scholar.
All the worldly wealth and glory cannot compare with
or be exchanged for the attainments of learning. The humble life meekly chosen, restrained from
worldly desires─this type of life is not a hardship!

People say that I am a secluded, cold figure, but I think
if people are not cold and secluded to the extreme,
they cannot contribute to world harmony. Anyone who
becomes interested in the fundamentals of academic
studies will have a spirit developed through solitude.
