The Study of the Mind
Mou Zongsan (1909 - 1995)
English translation: Sasha Lyapina

Awareness is equivalent to discovering and awakening
to the nature of virtue. Undoubtedly, this awakening does
not come out of thin air, it is based on the attainment of
experience and knowledge.

Sincerity is an outer expression of the inner mind. It is
the true innocence of the inner mind; it is the essence of
being observant.

In Taiwanese society, the core of philosophy is called
“the knowledge of life,” which refers to the mind and
its nature. Thus, one could say that it is the study of the
nature of mind. The most mature wisdom is that which
can discern between subjective and objective points
of view; it is a general principle and an immediate
resolution of mutual absorption of ideas.

Human wisdom, no matter what its origins are,
upholds sincerity and humility; it naturally develops with
time and breadth of experience. Only a non-materialistic
life is an authentic one, because it signifies life’s true qualities.
