Annotations on the Collection of Yongjia of the Chan School
Yongjia Xuanjue (665 - 712, Tang Dynasty)
English translation: Christine Gabrieles

Maintain a soft character,
seek not the faults of others.
Praise not the virtue of oneself,
      criticize not on matters.

Treat enemies and loved ones
      without differentiation,
without giving rise to likes and dislikes.

Desire not the possessions of others,
be not stingy with one’s wealth,
      be not violent or invasive.

Be upright and honest,
with a mind that is calm,
      always joyful and humble.

Speak not unwholesome words,
      do not unwholesome deeds,
      think not unwholesome thoughts;

Thus, one’s Threefold Karma* is purified.

── from Chanzong Yongjia Ji (Collection of Yongjia of the Chan School)

* Refers to the karma of one’s body, speech, and mind.
