Lesser Than a Clown
Venerable Master Hsing Yun (1927 - , Fo Guang Shan)
English translation: Zhi Yue and Siew-Hsiang Chow
We often place our happiness in other people’s hands by
being affected by their expressions, and by seeking illusory
satisfaction from the five desires in the external world.
There are times when we hold grudges because of a single
word, trap ourselves with worries because of a single situation,
become depressed because of a single person, or feel remorse
for life because of a single mistake.
By being less affected by the changes in the external world,
we can free ourselves from suffering. When we can let go of
gossip and stop comparing with others, we can be free from
the entanglements of interpersonal relationships. With no-
mind, everyday is pleasant, and every moment is refreshing and
joyous.
