譬如不下巨海,不能得無價寶珠;

The Treasures of Liberating Wisdom
Translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva (344 - 413, Eastern Jin Dynasty)
English translation: You Zai, Zhi Yue, and Linda Tsui

Lotuses do not grow on dry lands of the plateau, but in
muddy swamps. In the mud of afflictions, there are still
sentient beings who are eager to listen to the teachings.
Thus, one should know that all afflictions nurture the
nature of the Tathagata. For instance, if one does not descend
into the vast ocean, one can never obtain the priceless pearl.
Thus, if one does not enter into the vast ocean of afflictions,
then one can never obtain the treasures of wisdom.
