Description:

Three Chan Poems
Su Shi (1037 - 1101, Song Dynasty)
English translation: Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism

A Wall Inscription in Xilin Temple
A mass from across but a peak from the side,
Far, near, high, low, each is a view of sight;
Why fail to see the real face of Mount Lu?
Because right inside the Mountain of Lu is where you are at.

Observing the Tide
Misty rains of West Lake, and tides in Zhejiang,
Unless truly there, a thousand resentments will linger;
Having finally arrived, everything seemed purposeless,
Still the misty rains of West Lake, and still the tides in Zhejiang.

Presented to Elder Zong of Donglin Monastery
The babbling creeks are His broad, long tongue;
The scenic mountains are nothing but His pure body.
Nightfall brings eighty-four thousand gathas,
In days ahead, how to present them to others?
