Life and Death
Hanshan Deqing (1546 - 1623, Ming Dynasty)
English translation: Cindy Choi
The cycle of birth and death does not turn,
What turns would not be birth and death;
That which remains unturning in essence,
Would make life and death unending.
By contemplating the nature of turning,
The process of turning immediately stops;
By not seeing the mind that turns,
One thereby exits the cycle of birth and death.
── from Hanshan Laoren Mengyou Ji (Collection of Old Man Hanshan’s Dream Travels)
