望長城內外,惟餘莽莽;
惜秦皇漢武,略輸文采;

Spring in the Qin Garden
Mao Zedong (1893 - 1976)
A Northern Country Scene:
Thousands of miles sealed in ice,
Snow falling across the endless distance.
On both sides of the Great Wall,
There is nothing but whiteness.
From one end of the Yellow River to another,
All torrents have come into stillness.
Mountain ranges like a dancing silver snake,
The plains like waxy elephants galloping across,
As if contending with heaven for loftiness.
On a sunny day,
The brilliant red sun and pure white snow
Add to the enchantment.
Such sweet and charming land
That once brought many heroes to their knees.
Pity!
Emperors Qin Shi Huang and Wu of Han
Both fell short in literary grace;
Emperors Taizong of Tang and Taizu of Song
Lacked poetic souls;
Genghis Khan, Heaven’s favored son,
Only cared to stretch his bow and shoot eagles.
But all are bygone!
The truly great men
Are yet to appear in this age.
