不殺生,是不侵犯他人的生命,
更要積極的惜命護生;
不偷盜,是不侵犯他人的財產,
更要尊重他人的財產;
不邪淫,是不侵犯他人的身體,
更要尊重他人的名節;
不妄語,是不侵犯他人的名譽,
更要宣揚他人的美德;
不飲酒吸毒,是不損害自己的理智,
更要尊重自他身心的健康。

English translation: Miao Hsi and Miao Guang

Not killing means respecting the lives of others, as well
as protecting all life.

Not stealing means respecting the property of others,
as well as being generous and helpful.

No sexual misconduct means respecting the body of
others, as well as respecting their integrity.

Not lying means respecting the reputation of others,
as well as comforting and encouraging others.

Not taking intoxicants means respecting our own intellect,
as well as learning to be wise and helping others
to maintain clear thinking.
