When Worries Become Smiles
Hanshan (Years unknown, Tang Dynasty)
English translation: Miao Guang and You Zai

If I smile and worry less,
the world's worries will become smiles.
Worrying for others will eventually be futile,
since great awakening in fact arises from joy.
In a joyous country,
    sovereign and ministers accord.
In a joyous home,
    father and son unite.
When there is joy among siblings,
    the redbud tree will thrive.
When there is joy between husband and wife,
    marital harmony will last.
How would there be lack of joy between host and guest?
With joy, the bond between the superior and subordinate
    becomes even more stern.

── from Hanshanzi Shiji (Collected Poems of Hanshanzi)
