任難任之事,要有力而無氣;
處難處之人,要有知而無言;
行難行之道,要有信而無懼;

不合作,是做人最大的缺陷;
不明理,是做人最大的愚癡;
不貳過,是做人最大的聰明;

雖是天才,若常說:「等明日再說吧!」則與庸人無異;

不應讓而讓,是不負責,應讓而不讓,則是戀棧;

才算盡到己責;

Duty and Responsibility
Venerable Master Hsing Yun (1927 - , Fo Guang Shan)
English translation: Man Ho and Zhi Yue

When responsible for a difficult task,
    have strength without anger.
When getting along with difficult people,
    have awareness without words.
When going down a difficult road,
    have faith without fear.
When enduring a difficult situation,
    adapt without complaint.

The worst fault is unwillingness to get along.
The worst ignorance is blindness to truth.
The wisest thing is not to repeat a mistake.
The best cultivation is not to blame others for your faults.*

A genius who often says,
“Let’s put it off till tomorrow!”
is no better than someone who is mediocre.
A highly capable person who often says,
“Let someone else do it!”
is no better than someone who is incompetent.

── from Fo Guang Cai Gen Tan (Roots of Wisdom; *The Everlasting Light)

English translation: Miao Hsi and Cherry Lai

If we yield when we should not,
we are acting irresponsibly.

On the other hand,
if we refuse to yield when we should,
then we are too attached to our attributes.

In handling affairs and dealing with others,
we should be indifferent to fame and fortune,
but be serious about our duty.

── from Between Ignorance and Enlightenment

English translation: Tom Manzo and Shujan Cheng

While we can not expect everything that we do to be completely perfect,
we should at least be responsible and strive for completion.

While we can not expect everyone to be all able,
we can at least do our best and do what we are able.

── from Humble Table, Wise Fare
