戒殺詩 ─ 哀泣各分明

一指納沸湯，渾身驚欲裂；
一針刺己肉，遍體如刀割。
魚死向人哀，雞死臨刀泣；
哀泣各分明，聽者自不識。

The Distinct Sounds of Wailing
Tao Zhouwang (1562 - 1609, Ming Dynasty)
English translation: Miao Guang

Placing one finger in the boiling water,
One will feel ripping pains across the body;
Having a needle stuck in the flesh, one will feel as if
    a hundred knives are cutting into the body.

Dying fish plead to humans,
While moribund chickens cry under the blades.
Such distinctly clear wailings
    have yet to be recognized by the hearers.
