Principles of Social Relations
Yanyin Hongyi (1880 - 1942)
English translation: Miao Guang, Zhi Yue, and Alex Madjar

With every step one learns to yield, one gains a share of benefit.
With every enjoyment one gains, one consumes a portion of good fortune.

Never finish doing everything yourself,
Nor speak with full intent.
Keep your friendships bland,
Turn a deaf ear to slander,
Set a strict standard for self-improvement,
Play weak against offensiveness.

In dealing with arduous matters, the more generosity the better.
In facing difficult people, the more kindness and honesty the better.
In resolving urgent matters, the calmer the better.

── from Hongyi Dashi Quanji (The Complete Works of Master Hongyi)
