A Change of Perspective
Venerable Master Hsing Yun (1927 - , Fo Guang Shan)
English translation: Zhi Yue

Rainstorms outside are bound to end sooner or later, but how do
we appease the storms within our minds?

The Vaipulya-Mahavyuha Sutra (Great Adornment Sutra)
says, “Dependent on causes and conditions, nothing is solid or
substantial, just as a candle in the wind, a bubble in the water.”

We cannot rely on the impermanent world, which is like flowers
in a mirror or the moon in the water, to bring peace to our mind
and body. Crying and smiling are two sides of the same coin; what
matters is that change of thought.

After the rain, as you complain about how difficult it is to walk
on the muddy road, why not look up and see that a starry night sky
happens to be lighting up the path beneath your feet?

── from Hsing Yun Shuo Yu (Hsing Yun’s Commentaries on Allegories)
